Rhakios

Thanks for the various tips, which I will investigate.

Just to confirm it does exactly the same on my native install. To check, I changed the digital clock to plain and on reboot it had gone back to digital.

Right, I've got the nvidia driver installed now. What I did was:

Edited /usr/src/linux/Makefile to change the line
EXTRAVERSION = .9-1mdvcustom
to
EXTRAVERSION = .9-desktop-1mdv

Then cd into /usr/src/linux and
# make oldconfig
# make modules_prepare
# make prepare

Rebooted (don't know whether you have to do this or not, but I did) and ran
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.07-pkg1.run
and this time it installed OK.

So very many thanks for your help. Smile

Now to see if this prevents the screen lock-ups I was experiencing with the nv driver. Rolling Eyes

(Oh, and by the way, I see that my /usr/src/linux points to linux-2.6.22.9-1mdv but I didn't have to do anything about that.)

Later edit
Well it seems to have solved the screen lock-ups but unfortunately an adverse effect of the nvidia driver is that it has distorted the screen shape (pin-cushion), which no amount of fiddling with the monitor controls can correct. Like you, Rhakios, I am not sure how much longer I can (or want to) continue with Mandriva 2008. I'm back in the arms of my old love SUSE 10.3 right now. Wink

Just out of interest, I popped Mandriva 2008 on to VirtualBox (Windows host) and, surprisingly, there is no audible interference, even though Aux is not muted. Still can't get changed clock settings to stick though!

I am posting this from PCLinuxOS 2007 and can't help thinking that this is what Mandriva should have been. Smile

Yes, changing the clock to whatever you like works in PCLOS 2007 and the newer 2008 Mini-me edition. But then Mandriva is the only distro that has given me trouble when customising the desktop. Ho hum.
I'm also inclined to think that the PCLOS live installer might actually put GRUB where you want it as well Wink

Well I certainly didn't have any problems on this front when I installed PCLOS in May last year.

I always thought Linux was supposed to be about choice, so seeing a screen suddenly appear with the words "Installing bootloader" (as happens with Mandriva 2008) is somewhat disturbing. Shocked

For my sins, I am still messing about with this and have managed to rectify the distortion problem by changing the resolution to 1280x1024 (from 1024x768). Even this was not without difficulty. I thought I would have been able to do it fairly simply from the nvidia X server settings but couldn't. I had to manually add 1280x1024 to xorg.conf and then run XFdrake (twice) before it would stick.

I don't like 1280x1024 because it makes everything far too small for my poor old eyes! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Just to add a few pennies worth.

As a devout Windows VMWare Workstation user, and Ubuntu (Kubuntu) convert, I needed a virtual windows PC so that I could utilise all my windows applications. I tried VMWare for Linux and was pleasantly surprised that it worked fine, but rather than pay for another VMWare licence I tried Virtual Box. It was great, I now have windows set up and running with no issues with all my applications available at the touch of a button.

With this recommendation I read the part about magazine 103. Its great to install different distros and see how they work, but to grab someones attention, I would rather have vbox images. If I want to try eight distros on my day (I know even the wife says I should get a life) I would rather flick between vboxes than watch tv for 40 minutes inbetween installs....

By the way ....great magazine!

VirtualBox image only work on VirtualBox. You can use them with VMware, you can't install them to hard disk and you can't boot them as a live CD. All of those can be done with ISO images.

That's exactly what my husband says about me. "Playing with penguins" is how he describes my hobby! Smile

I have explained to him that learning about, using, and maintaining Linux is an excellent way to keep the old grey cells in good order, which we of, er, a certain age are encouraged to do so we don't go prematurely gaga.

Fantastic!!!

I was installing the 169.09 drivers to play 'Enemy Territory:Quake Wars' when I ran into problems.
When it turned out that the kernel was not OK for Nvidia, the installer first tried to ftp one from Nvidia, which didn't work and then prompted me to compile a kernel !! Because I had installed the default 'desktop', I had to install gcc, glibc, make etc. and then finally the kernel sources.
Got some errors and started reading here ... luckily!

Thanks again! And also to Rhakios !

Yep, I do ... and Mandriva also trashed my MBR while I explicitly told it to install the loader on the Linux root.

BTW: I just installed JRE 1.6.0_03 and it works fine with Konqueror and .jar files. It also shows up in about:plugins in Firefox 2.0.0.6, I did the symbolic link to the plugin .so, but it doesn't work ?! The test page at Sun does not show the animation, no errors, just nothing at all ...
Anybody know to fix this ?

Nothing to do with me. Thanks are due to Rhakios alone. All I did was merely follow the wise old owl's instructions. Very Happy

As it has done this to me on two separate installations on different machines and has also done it to you, surely this must be a bug? I wonder if it has been reported.

I didn't have JRE on my Mandriva so I have just installed it and exactly the same thing has happened to me. I have no problems at all with JRE on my Fedora 7 - and I followed exactly the same procedure when installing on Mandriva. I shall have to investigate further.

Well, from having a quick look round the forums, it appears that the www.java.com version doesn't work very well with Mandriva.

So what I have done is uninstall the JRE I downloaded from there and also removed the soft link I had created: /usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.6/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so.

Then I went to "Install & Remove Software" and selected java-1.7.0-icedtea (which also installs java-access-bridge) plus java-1.7.0-icedtea-plugin, and now when I test with Firefox at www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp it confirms java is installed correctly. It also confirmed a correct installation using Konqueror but I first had to change the executable path to /usr/bin/java (Settings > Configure Konqueror > Java & JavaScript > Path to Java executable) - as I had the previous version in the /opt directory.

Regarding the problem of Mandriva trashing the MBR, I've found a couple of bug reports here and here.

Should that be on the LFX102 DVD or do I have to add a repository to the install & remove software program ??

While installing Mandriva, something went wrong right before the end (setting up internet connection in 'Summary') so I missed the 'Updates' step Sad ...

EDIT: just added 'official updates' and 'distribution sources' thru the media manager and now icedtea is in the list ! been some time since working with Mandrakes 7 thru 10, but it's all coming back!

EDIT2: yep, it works!! tested with : http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

Thanks again!

Glad to hear it worked for you, Goner.

Unfortunately I myself can't install anything now as today Mandriva has decided to keep throwing up error messages "rpm database locked/urpmi database locked".

From googling around I discover that the solution is supposed to be to remove /var/lib/urpmi/.LOCK and /var/lib/urpmi/.RPMLOCK.

Well, I don't have a .RPMLOCK file in /var/lib/urpmi and every time I remove .LOCK (which I do have) the b***** thing keeps coming back. Evil or Very Mad

I can tell you one thing - to be a Mandriva user you surely have to be a glutton for punishment !! Wink
