Right, I've got the nvidia driver installed now. What I did was:

Edited /usr/src/linux/Makefile to change the line
EXTRAVERSION = .9-1mdvcustom
to
EXTRAVERSION = .9-desktop-1mdv

Then cd into /usr/src/linux and
# make oldconfig
# make modules_prepare
# make prepare

Rebooted (don't know whether you have to do this or not, but I did) and ran
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.07-pkg1.run
and this time it installed OK.

So very many thanks for your help. Smile

Now to see if this prevents the screen lock-ups I was experiencing with the nv driver. Rolling Eyes

(Oh, and by the way, I see that my /usr/src/linux points to linux-2.6.22.9-1mdv but I didn't have to do anything about that.)

Well it seems to have solved the screen lock-ups but unfortunately an adverse effect of the nvidia driver is that it has distorted the screen shape (pin-cushion), which no amount of fiddling with the monitor controls can correct. Like you, Rhakios, I am not sure how much longer I can (or want to) continue with Mandriva 2008. I'm back in the arms of my old love SUSE 10.3 right now. Wink

Just out of interest, I popped Mandriva 2008 on to VirtualBox (Windows host) and, surprisingly, there is no audible interference, even though Aux is not muted. Still can't get changed clock settings to stick though!

I am posting this from PCLinuxOS 2007 and can't help thinking that this is what Mandriva should have been. Smile

Yes, changing the clock to whatever you like works in PCLOS 2007 and the newer 2008 Mini-me edition. But then Mandriva is the only distro that has given me trouble when customising the desktop. Ho hum.
I'm also inclined to think that the PCLOS live installer might actually put GRUB where you want it as well Wink

Just to add a few pennies worth.

As a devout Windows VMWare Workstation user, and Ubuntu (Kubuntu) convert, I needed a virtual windows PC so that I could utilise all my windows applications. I tried VMWare for Linux and was pleasantly surprised that it worked fine, but rather than pay for another VMWare licence I tried Virtual Box. It was great, I now have windows set up and running with no issues with all my applications available at the touch of a button.

With this recommendation I read the part about magazine 103. Its great to install different distros and see how they work, but to grab someones attention, I would rather have vbox images. If I want to try eight distros on my day (I know even the wife says I should get a life) I would rather flick between vboxes than watch tv for 40 minutes inbetween installs....

By the way ....great magazine!

VirtualBox image only work on VirtualBox. You can use them with VMware, you can't install them to hard disk and you can't boot them as a live CD. All of those can be done with ISO images.
