I've just deleted half a dozen mobile phone spam posts that appeared overnight. I wasn't surprised to see them and they were immediately recognisable (Nokia N95 etc). What was surprising was that each of the threads had up to 30 views.

Are people really so bored at 4am that they have to read spam? Confused

Perhaps it's always the same 30 gullible fools who make the spammers lives worthwhile. They must make their money somewhere.

Oh, if you're a gullible fool reading this, I can get you some genuine herbal viagra. Very Happy

I'm still in favour of this idea:

Interpol (or whatever) sends out a load of fake spam messages containing the obligatory link. Gullible fools click the link and fill in their address etc. -- next day Interpol goes round to a few Gullible fools' houses and rip out the phone line. The Press makes a big hoo-hah about it, and scares others from doing the same.

Result = fewer people responding to spam, therefore less spam. I hope. Or am I just dreaming again? Smile

I'm in favour of this idea:

Every time a spam message is received EVERYONE who received it responds with utter nonsense, send them fake names addresses & phone numbers. Therefore the 1000 or so gullible punters who respond to the spam are hidden underneath the 100,000,000 other responses. The whole SPAM idea becomes immediately unworkable and they'll stop.

a bit like this only on a much larger scale

Your definitely not in the real world! Razz

Only by prosecuting the company advertising in the spam will there be any impact on spam - but I think I'm dreaming too! Wink

Only 11 reads for the post by VIDIC I just deleted, but then it did have iPhone in the title rather than N95 Wink

Ollie, it's even more simple: boycot the company that is advertised. It hurts where it hurts them most: in their wallet. Mind you, sending unsollicited email (i.e. spamming) is still legal in nearly all countries, so prosecuting isn't an option in many cases...

Would some of those reads be google + other search engine bots just cataloging?

Interesting question. I've just put the subject of the latest one in Google and it came up as the first link. But that spam has 38 reads in a few hours, could they all be search engines (and towy Razz)?

Well I was at least 2, I checked a couple to see who they were and whether all the add had the same Emails. And BTW boycotting the companies won't work in this case 'cos this was scam, they have nothing to sell they're just trying to con some punters into sending them money a-la 419 scams.
