| I successfuly installed the Debian3.1 DVD, but fail to get X-windows running. The command xstart or xdm is not recognized (looks like X is not installed). What do I do wrong ? |

| Try `startx`, not `xstart`. |

Did you select the Desktop option during installation? _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

| Thanks for the suggestion Nelz !. I thought I selected it by highlighting the option, but seems that you also have to press the space-bar to get in * in the selection box. |

That's the problem I had - burned the iso's to the 6 cd's and started the install.
I thought you only had to highlight the type of install you wanted as that's what i'd done for previous options
I've started it again and i'll press the space bar for Desktop! |

In a console window type . It will load a console package manager you will recognise. Just load the desktop packages (X11) from there and I'd recommend ensure you have GNOME. I cannot help with the specific packages as I use Ubuntu. You never need to reinstall Linux though. There are always tools to help you get through these issues.
