Along the same lines as Dutch_Master, there is no "best" distro because it depends on what it is being used for - desktop, laptop, netbook, web server, file server, database server, mail server, ADSL modem, router, disaster recovery, portable and many other niches that I can't think of at the moment.
IMHO Linux is the best distro for every situation, it just takes more work to get the configuration right sometimes |

If it is for MythTV, Mythbuntu.
For most other stuff, OpenSuse with Ubuntu close second. _________________ The sig between the asterisks is so cool that only REALLY COOL people can even see it!

A vote for Mandriva One 2009. Stable implementation of KDE4 (sorry, my beloved openSUSE, you messed this up for me in the first few seconds after installation!).
Very impressed by Fedora 9 and 10 as well. Very polished and stable. |

Nah................. Puppy Linux 4.1.1. Runs from HD, USB, Live CD, does Broadcom (and most others) out of the box, and weighs in at a hefty 90MB. _________________ Trying to stay sane in a crazy world...... |

My vote would be for either Xandros or Linpus, even though I've used neither. Both distros have brought Linux to people who would otherwise have not sought it out, had it not been for the success of netbooks.
2008, it was the year of the desktop, but who would have guessed what type of desktop it would have been to actually make it happen.
(Asus apparently, but it seems like a pleasant accident rather than purely design). _________________ I think, therefore I compile |

For me, it's been openSUSE 11.0. It featured a number of real improvements in package management that have made it both quicker and easier to use. Meanwhile, it did allow me to keep using KDE3.5.x while KDE4 is still in heavy development.
I would like to have been able to say that 11.1 was the best, but it has presented me with a number of stumbling blocks that, while perhaps not insurmountable, are not present in 11.0 and so I can see no point in moving my machines across to 11.1.
I shall look forward to 11.2 around the middle of this new year, hoping that KDE4.2 will finally inspire me with enough confidence to make the jump to the new version of KDE. _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

With SUSE, I have long believed that nothing is gained by changing from a .0 version to a .1 version. Better to hang on until .2 arrives.
I have not tried 11.1 and in view of what you say I shall simply keep using 11.0 (an excellent distro) and wait for 11.2.
Joint nomination from me: SUSE 11.0 and Ubuntu (notwithstanding what they have done to xorg.conf in the latter ) |

That will happen in all the distros that have upgraded Xorg to the latest Fedora 9 was the same and 10 more so but i haven't installed it yet i have had bad experiences with the even numbered fedora releases for a while so i tend to avoid them till the next release the fedora crew load up the fall releases with new stuff that takes a while to settle down
Enjoy the Choice |
