|
|
Amazingly last week i saw a linux advertisement for SuSE in a non linux magazine, but something like a computer magazine/
However even with a bit of excitement, it wasn't well exactly informative about Linux: i think it said something like" take a ride with us", with someone hopping into us.
Should there be a linux user group who raise funds for advertisements of Linux.
Latest news, just shows that france is giving out two cds to students for open source apps aswell as a live linux distro. Shouldn't there be something like this in England /UK That is probably why Linux isn't heard off! |

Who would fund it in the backwards proprietory UK?
I would but my Open Source funding is currently roughly £10 per month. _________________ Andrew Hutchings, Linux Jedi

Back in 1998 or thereabouts, SUSE used to advertise in PC Plus -- a half-page ad next to the Linux tutorial pages, targeted at hobbyists. PCP was 99% Windows content at the time so that was great to see.
As for advertising, SUSE/Novell, Red Hat and co. all have enough coffers in the bank to pay for their own ads, but yes -- promoting the community projects more would be good.

take a look at spreadfirefox, the majority of firefox users were probably persuaded to use firefox through there, through the referral system: (even i went through there to get firefox, as i became intrested, what about linux)
an even simpler idea would be promoting linux, is going in town, middle of a shopping centre, get a computer whacked on with knoppix, and say let people use the internet, apps .etc then hand out knoppix cd's |

Again it comes down to funding, I would be happy to do that, but it would take 6 months to a year for me to be able to fund something like that. _________________ Andrew Hutchings, Linux Jedi

Should the LUG's get together and organise something? Would that work?
Giving distros out to students is a good idea.
I would certainly be more than willing to help promote Linux to the masses! _________________ Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad. |

Hmmm...possible, I don't think my LUG members would be able to rally enough for it, but in other areas it is certainly plausable. _________________ Andrew Hutchings, Linux Jedi

What linux needs is a TV advert along the lines of one of those struggling-with-finance-with-nowehre-to-turn ads
"Are you sick and tired of spyware, adware and constant crashing with your computer? Can't keep up with the constant Microsoft security updates? Is your anit-virus package doing more harm than good? There is a way. If you're a computer-owner and using a Microsoft operating system and looking for a way out then call Linux Direct TODAY on 0800 438 54689. Our dedicated operators can help you on your way to a more secure, faster, safer and more enjoyable computing future."

| Hmm, I would be careful with "Can't keep up with the constant Microsoft security updates?" I mean, the linux kernel, and other other bits get updated almost hourly... |

Spot on ol' chap!
The problem with Microsoft, and other proprietry operationing systems is that you have to wait for the supplier to a)inform you of a security risk, and b)devlier the fix - but by then it could be too late... |
