sorry, but I agree with him.
Flash is buggy, insecure, resource hungry, proprietary junk.
The sooner that Flash and ActiveX die the better, IMHO.

Flash is buggy and does cause problems, it's just that h.264 isn't a suitable replacement. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is a standard for video compression, which doesn't doesn't include interactivity. Part of the problem is that there is no replacement that does everything that Flash does in one package. This leads web developers to push Flash to it's limits and beyond.

Jobs is absolutely right. As Ollie says the alternatives are not perfect, but here's hoping - with time - that the combination of canvas, animated SVG, and ideally a free video format will become mature enough to replace them.

Today we have good competition in the browser world and increasing convergence towards standards (even IE is getting better). Having a binary blob from a single company involved in all of this is lame. Flash is a horrible old relic, and it doesn't help that it's almost comically badly programmed.

Death to Flash!

Thanks for that...

I wonder why a PUBLIC broadcaster, paid for by the public,
wishes to remove around 10% of its payers from
viewing/listening to its content. Hmmm, is it now a fully
fledged business?
If so then let advertising pay for their licen(ce)/(se) and
running costs, that way they can decide how to stream
their content. As we are paying them then we should have
the choice of how to receive stream it...

I wonder if we have legal rights on this one?

I assume that the BBC is having its arm twisted by the rights holders of (some of) the programmes it places on iPlayer.

I imaging the choice was "protect this content (from copying) or remove it". In other words p*ss of a relatively small number of FOSS fans or be forced to remove a large number of programmes and p*ss of a lot more people.
