|
|
I have recently come into the possession of an iPod Touch 3rd generation.
I'd like to know if there is any way to sync it using Linux and the USB cable, to be as fast (or nearly) as iTunes. Obviously there is no Linux version of iTunes, and the information I have gathered that have said it is impossible are a few years old now.
Is there a way to sync this device with Linux? (Taking into account the database which means there is no mass storage support enable checkbox in iTunes)
Thanks |

Both Amarok and RhythmBox are able to sync with Ipods, including updating the database. _________________ "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." (Albert Einstein) |

| I have heard that is true for regular iPods but as for iPod Touches, they are completely different, including handling audio and video, whereas normal ones work, Touches do not, I have been unable to get mine to work with those applications. |

Unfortunately, the Amarok Wiki agrees with you, unless the phone is jailbroken. _________________ "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." (Albert Einstein) |

| I'd jailbreak it but I can't find a way to transfer the files half as fast as on iTunes, only through wireless, which is just slow. Is there a way to do it through the USB cable? |

I have done it the easy way: installed iTunes on WinXP running inside VirtualBox. No risks, no hassle.
EDIT: True, this solution is not for everyone. My desktop came with an XP license, which I am now using exclusively as a virtual machine inside VirtualBox. _________________ In a world without walls and fences, we don't need windows and gates.

Only the expense of a Win XP Pro licence, just to copy a few songs _________________ "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." (Albert Einstein) |

I suggest the easiest way to get this to happen is to put pressure on Apple to port to Linux. It is NOT difficult for them. They will do it if they see that it will be beneficial for them to sell more through the iTunes store.
There is a petition around.

Well Apple is responsive to market pressure especially if they can sell more stuff through the iTunes store.
This is a huge income stream for them. I think that we know that Apple are very principled about certain things - e.g. OSX on any hardware. This is a philosophical thing as Apple dont want to get into a game of supporting multiple hardware devices and their drivers.
On the iPod/iTouch/iPhone sync issue I believe that the current round of Ubuntu 10.04, Mandriva 2010, PCLinuxOS 2010 are all menat to have sync for these divices in the release.
I havent tested as yet. |

The support for iPods is provided with no help from Apple at all. Essentially, Apple want you to buy their hardware and use their on-line stores, the only reason there is a Windows iTunes client is that something like 90% of computer users have access to a Windows machine.
It would take a lot of requests for a Linux iTunes client before Apple can be bothered.
Meanwhile the community is doing a pretty good job, and Amazon are good enough to provide a Linux version of their downloader (albeit 32-bit only atm) and now there's always the Ubuntu One store. _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

I'm sure that if it proves popular it will be extended to other countries. Though I wonder if Canonical will need make agreements with different on-line retailers. _________________ Bye, Rhakios |
