I have recently come into the possession of an iPod Touch 3rd generation.

I'd like to know if there is any way to sync it using Linux and the USB cable, to be as fast (or nearly) as iTunes. Obviously there is no Linux version of iTunes, and the information I have gathered that have said it is impossible are a few years old now.

Is there a way to sync this device with Linux? (Taking into account the database which means there is no mass storage support enable checkbox in iTunes)

Both Amarok and RhythmBox are able to sync with Ipods, including updating the database.

I have heard that is true for regular iPods but as for iPod Touches, they are completely different, including handling audio and video, whereas normal ones work, Touches do not, I have been unable to get mine to work with those applications.

I'd jailbreak it but I can't find a way to transfer the files half as fast as on iTunes, only through wireless, which is just slow. Is there a way to do it through the USB cable?

Solved by using iFuse and a branch of the libgpod git repo.

I have done it the easy way: installed iTunes on WinXP running inside VirtualBox. No risks, no hassle.

EDIT: True, this solution is not for everyone. My desktop came with an XP license, which I am now using exclusively as a virtual machine inside VirtualBox.

I suggest the easiest way to get this to happen is to put pressure on Apple to port to Linux. It is NOT difficult for them. They will do it if they see that it will be beneficial for them to sell more through the iTunes store.

The support for iPods is provided with no help from Apple at all. Essentially, Apple want you to buy their hardware and use their on-line stores, the only reason there is a Windows iTunes client is that something like 90% of computer users have access to a Windows machine.
It would take a lot of requests for a Linux iTunes client before Apple can be bothered.
Meanwhile the community is doing a pretty good job, and Amazon are good enough to provide a Linux version of their downloader (albeit 32-bit only atm) and now there's always the Ubuntu One store.
