Can't send Photos via evolution email

Postby TheWizardofOdds » Sat Jul 24, 2010 11:51 am

Hi,

I'm having trouble sending photos(F spot Manager)with evolution, as attachment.

I'm sending only 8 photos, 17.3 MB. and am receiving error message and that is all.

The ethernet light on my modem flashes constantly when the files are 'sending'.

The files are JPEG. Using latest version of Ubuntu.

Any help much appreciated. This is a major pain and I need to send these today.

* 'DATA command failed, Broken pipe, message not sent'. This is the error message?
Thanks.

How are you send them? My ISP limits attachments to 5Mb though you can send up to five at a time.

I initially tried to send all at once, then thought there might be a limit so I tried to send only one photo, still to no avail.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Googling evolution broken pipe throws up 2 answers

1) Install the exim4 package.
Or
2) Select SMTP in preferences instead of Sendmail when sending e-mails.

see:

and
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=873400

I can't test these as I don't use evolution.

It may be that the tmp holding time for the files you want to send is too short. I had what sounds like a similar problem with thunderbird, where having chosen the files in f-spot, and made the email message, the "send" would fail, saying the "files in the attachment tmp folder could not be retrieved" or something like that.

It was easily overrcome by adding a new integer key to the gconf-editor for apps->f-spot->export->email as shown below.
Code: Select all
delete_timeout_seconds   1800
Use whatever timeout seems needed for you; my 1800 was completely arbitrary, and more than enough, half an hour.

The apps->f-spot->export->email will not exist until you have tried to send photos that way from f-spot, which I assume you have already tried, but by default the timeout key will not exist, though 30 secs is the default timeout not shown.[/img]
Xubuntu 12.04 user, and loving it!
