Ok. I'm fed up with crappy distorted sound in Ubuntu. I've tried everything I know and a fair amount other people seem to think will work.
Is there a decent fix for the distorted sound I get playing music or some films?
Will installing this spare sound card I have help?

My laptop have really week sound and therefore connected to external 2.1 speakers.
Depending on what version of ubuntu you are using you could try PulseAudio System Wide Eq. to improve the sound

That soundcard looks like a c-media which could output 5.1 which I had in my computer! |

I assume you have tried the speakers with a different computer / os and they sound ok...

I have sort of tried with different computer.
Basically, I've had crappy sound since 8.10, which I haven't been able to fix. I've changed to 64 bit when I got the new(er) PC, but have kept all the hardware, just changed tower.
Prior to changing to 10.04, the machine was dual booted with XP, which had no sound issues, so I have had no real reason to suspect the speakers.

Just tried the pulseaudio equaliser, and it made the distortion worse. |

Which audio controller are you using at the moment?
If the audio was OK in Windows, I'm guessing it's a driver issue with your current controller, so give the CMI8738 card a go and see if there is any improvement.

Have you tried changing the audio profile?
»Left click volume control
»Select Sound Preferences...
»Click Hardware tab
»Select a different profile
I have these in my profile:
Analog Stereo Duplex
Analog Stereo Output
Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Analog Stereo Input
Digital Stereo Duplex
Analog Stereo Input
Off « which obviously turns the sound off!

Result: 00:14.5 Multimedia audio controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)
Ioebus - I have all those options and a few more. I have tried them all, but with no luck. At present, the best output comes from Analog Surround 4.0 Output + Analog Stereo Input |

Looks like I have no choice now. My sound drivers seem to have disappeared overnight (actually since I did ubuntu update!)  |

Have a read of this thread . I use it on my laptop as sound is broken, only get it with headphones plugged in. The scripts fixes it and I can't complain about the quality.

Actually, the card fixed it. And solved the crappy sound as well.  If only I could get VoIP working with my friend on Vista (which works connecting to my friend using Win7  ), I'd be sorted! |

Spoke too soon. I've had better sound, but it now tends to screw up part way through playing stuff.
Would reverting to Debian sort it, or is it a problem there also? How about Mint? I'd rather not switch from Ubuntu, but I need the sound fixed.  |
