CIFS/SMB communication will work with linux and winblows (assuming you have samba client installed on linux). I actually have a share on my nas mounted on my myth tv box via samba.
I could have gone for a plug server thing a me bob and installed everything myself, but I just wanted something I could turn on, it work without any fuss and just be there |
Nice one, cheers. I basically want the same, something that just works.
Good point on the drives, need to make sure i'm not being tied down to a particular vendor.
Thanks again. |

got mine 8-9 months ago and its been on 24/7 since then with only the odd reboot for firmware updates. |

I got me a Netgear Stora.
i think they have a bad name but I got into it via ssh from using this site www.openstora.com/.
I now control it via webmin, very sweet!
two 1.5 Tb drives, teh device is more or less teh exact same size as the two drives!
With a little tweaking you can do anything.
The default set up is good, but they direct you to mystora.com to access your NAS, very weird and big brother ish.
But i just turned off the redirect as per the wiki at openstora.com.
Oh and I got the empty box off ebay for €60!
All works fine with no complaints, currently rsyncing 65GB of photos; ext drive to NAS to web hosting.
Very happy!
