KDE 4.3 for me.
When I first started with Linux (Red Hat 7) I used KDE 2.x and have stuck with it through the whole 3.x series and now to its current regeneration of 4.x
I've tried gnome but couldn't get used to the (lack of) configuration options, but I also run XFCE as the desktop on my Mythbuntu box - and I tend to install that on any servers I build because it's relatively lightweight compared to KDE or Gnome. |

I know I`m gonna be slated for this so...
My first Linux - NOT - desktop was Fall `95 P`n`P
YGGDRASIL - UGH!
UGH again, I never got it working so I have no
idea what GUI it used...
My fav` desktop is AmigaOS 3.1 Workbench, bog
standard and use it all the time, even under WinUAE.
Windows XP has become one of the most stable
platforms I have come across and a functional GUI
to boot.
LBNL, I used to use Knoppix but now use PCLinuxOS.
I don`t usually grab a screen with any Linux flavour
and I miss the `PrtScn` or `Alt-PrtScn` facility that
is standard under Windies. KSnapshot? is a cool
alternative however and works every time for my
needs...
So PCLinixOS 2009 for me... ;o) _________________ 73...

Unusually enough on this rarefied forum, my favorite is JWM. Maybe because I know it so well? It is very lightweight, and the fastest I have ever used. It has to be configured mainly by hand which must put a lot of people off, but worth it in the end I think. I wish I could get Ubuntu with JWM. Heresy? Will have to try Crunchbang at some point. _________________ Trying to stay sane in a crazy world...... |

| I use Gnome because it come as default from Ubuntu. Although I have try KDE on OpenSuse but I still prefer Gnome because it took me away from Window. |

Fluxbox as my window manager/ desktop.
It just does what I want it to do, I don't need all sorts of options, just click and go. _________________ http://thesignofthecross.blogspot.com

gnome does all I need and is ethical too. I tidied up the default debian install because it wasn't minimalist enough for me. Still isn't really, but it's not a priority atm.
Ktried kde a kfew ktimes - kmenu khell, kdual-klicensing, kirritatingly kkrazy for kk. Kno kway khose!
Like rox, but only the filer is as yet in the debian stable repository, so maybe another time. _________________ Cheers,

I use the Gnome desktop, simple and clean.
There are no icons on the desktop
One panel at the top, which I have menu icon, firefox, show desktop, talika, volume, wifi and clock showing. |

Xfce for me. I love it. Despite the banter on the TuxRadar Podcast, I don't have any huge beefs with KDE and Gnome, and I'm sure I could configure them to the way I work if I needed to. But Xfce works perfectly for me -- I don't need to trim it down and it really focuses on usability rather than bells and whistles.

Fluxbox all the way for me, for... ooh... 4 main reasons:
- It's faster than Jehu the son of Nimshi when he's late for work
- It doesn't get in the way if I want to use an Xscreensaver hack as a backdrop (same goes for Xpenguins
)
- The auto-hiding Slit
- Ability to combine multiple windows as tabs in the same frame
I'm also a fan of Windowmaker and XFCE. I've used KDE a lot lately (because Mandy likes it) and I think it's a good 'concept desktop' to showcase the latest in cool ideas, but I find it a tad slow and unstable for production use. |

I use KDE4, because the (*^)*& developers FORCED the upgrade from KDE3 to KDE4.
KDE4 is STILL missing lots of applications that worked in KDE3, and look like they will never be replaced / there's no KDE4 equivalent.
Then despite the time KDE4 has been around, there are still issues with the applications. K3B worked fine in KDE3, but still bits broken in KDE4.
I could never get into Gnome, and the other versions are not show-off enough of what Linux can do. Having said that, I did use the basic layout when I had BeOS5 PE on my system years ago. |

Though, on me A1200, I use AmigaOS3.9 with MagicWB.... I find it's just what _I_ want from an OS.... fast, almost always responding to the mouse/keyboard.... and above all... it's never in the way of anything. It just there giving me a helping hand to do what _I_ want to do, not what Redmond wants me to do.
On Linux, though... I prefer XFCE, it jut feels snappier and more responsive than Gnome and KDE. And I muchly prefer KDE3.5 over the 4.x versions... I can never get used to the 4.x feeling.
Though, in order of my likings, best liked first, least liked bottom:
AmigaOS
XFCE
Gnome (all the bells and whistles turned off)
Linux shell (bash, for example)
DOS
KDE3.x
KDE4.x
Redmond 98SE
Redmond 2000
Redmond XP
Redmond 95
Redmond Vista/Seven
Redmond 3.x
GEM

| I use Gnome as it was default on Ubuntu. My first dip into linux was Suse 10.1 with Gnome. I did try Kubuntu and quite liked KDE 3.*, but when they switched to KDE 4.* as default I hadn't played with KDE enough to be smitten, and hated KDE 4.0, so I swapped back to Gnome, and have pretty much stuck with it. |
