I would love to try 'Linux From Scratch' but it is a little daunting on dial-up.
Is there any chance of Linux Format putting together a 'Linux From Scratch Special.' with all the packages together on the DVD. A feature & tutorials would be nice too. |

Could be good, although it's very specialised -- a load of tarballs wouldn't be of great use to those who wanted new binary distros or other software. Conversely, tarballs can be built and installed nigh-on anywhere, so there's some value in that.
friendly guy, can I ask you: how extensive is LFS thesedays? As in, would the tarballs take up most of a DVD (not really doable) or just a few hundred megs?

I know the answer to that one. The packages all up are only about 125megs and there are about 80 - 120megs of patches. Basiclly the size of Cygwin in LXF64D or less. I think LFS would be great to have on the DVD/CD for those who havent used it. _________________ "In short: just say NO TO DRUGS, and maybe you won't end up like the Hurd people." -- Linus Torvalds |

Hi all. Having just built an LFS system I know the LFS Live CD takes up about 350 Mb including the packages from the book and the book itself in html format. Putting the LFS Live CD iso on the coverdisk may be a good idea; possibly with a covering article or an interview with the creator of LFS, Gerard Beekmans. _________________ Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent |

| Havent built LFS, read the book - very handy for any linux distro BTW, but from what I understand if you add XOrg and GUI's then that's a couple of hundred extra MB (esp if Gnome or KDE) |
