I would very much like the opinions of Linux Experts/gurus on whether it is better to update to the latest version of Firefox or SeaMonkey; manually installing as necessary, or to stick to the version supplied by that particular Linux Distribution, relying on rather delayed updates.

What about an option to use a distro that provides timely updates? _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

I didn't think of that.
But are there any distros that update to the latest version of Firefox & Seamonkey?
I've not seen any! |

OpenSUSE, at least if you add the right repos (using 11.0 with Firefox3.5.3). _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

Well I'm still using 11.0, but I don't believe 11.1 won't be up to date as well. When I look at the software installer I see Seamonkey at 1.1.18 available from the mozilla repository. You probably haven't added that one, it's one of the listed community repositories. _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

| I would have thought so: and I would imagine the same applies to Fedora 11 and Mandriva free2009 |

Yes, I got a package manager update to 3.5.3 the morning after it was released.

I've not seen a Unicorn, doesn't mean they don't exist _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

Linux Mint has crippled the google tool bar results. It's probably the most used feature on the browser (for me at least).
It's something to do with revenue. |

1) I think I can be certain beyond reasonable doubt that unicorns do not exist, and I Like the bug avatar.
2) OK OK: I get the message. Make sue that the repositaries are correctly set, including the Mozilla repositary, and then Mozilla web browsers will be upgraded to latest version
3) But I cannot see that manually installing seamonkey and firefoxto /usr/local can do any harm, except that I do not know how to add the applicaion to the distros list of installed apps.
4) I do notice that after installing the latest version of Sun java Run time environment that a lot of people have trouble knowing where the plugins directory is located, to put in a symbolic link to the Sun Java Plugin. I found a lot of that in Open Suse forums.
I instaled the Sun Java after installing Webmin & Usermin, which use Java. |

Maybe, but not having seen one yourself doesn't prove their lack of existence. I've never seen an honest politician either

You can't, and there's the harm. You don't get notification of security updates. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |
