When I used to smoke, the insides of my PC would get layered with orangey-brown gunk. I never thought what that must've done to things like the DVD drive lens (let alone my lungs)...

Good I say. I'm sick of working on peoples computers at work where the fans and filters are all clogged up with tar and I end up stinking of smoke afterwards. _________________ Join GiffGaff and get £5 free credit |

Banning smoking doesn't remove the years of accumulated tar. But you may have a case for refusing to work on them now and the company could justify replacing them with new computers. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

More often then not they are home users PC's. We have people that work from home also though. I work for an outsourced IT support company. _________________ Join GiffGaff and get £5 free credit |

Hmmm, interesting concept, except, if you are a one man band
and need the work, how would you refuse? _________________ 73...

If you were your own boss, you could make the choice for yourself. As an employee, this may give some ammunition to an argument to not have to work on such foul, sticky hardware. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

And there is a good chance that the contamination itself actually caused the failure, which means that the warranty is invalid anyway.
Years ago, my company had to write off a Photocopier that had been used in a small office where all 3 occupants smoked.
The interior was so badly fouled, it was impossible to clean it without damaging it.. _________________ The sig between the asterisks is so cool that only REALLY COOL people can even see it!
