| It also tells you why paying exorbitant salaries to company directors and civil servants and bonuses to bankers is a complete waste of money and the underlying cause of the financial mess the country is in. |

And a world wide phenomena at that too...
There have been numerous tests/experiments made, that suggest various human quirks. One of which relates to this (the electro shock one being probably the most known) is our need for some sought of official confirmation to back our actions. We like to trust in authorities, possibly so we can avoid the hammer if were wrong. Even the likes of me, that have, well, issues with authority will still display this.
It kind of makes life easier for the villains when they wack on a suite i suppose. And they get off far to lightly too. It seems all they have to do, is resign and exit stage right, while clutching their option port-folios, to get themselves off the hook.
Solutions ... ?

Don't ask what they are paid, ask what they are worth. For example fruit pickers are paid by the amount of saleable fruit they pick, salesmen are paid commission on what they sell. What we need is a similar metric for "top manager performance". Then, let the market find the going rate. Successful rock and film stars are paid quadzillions on the basis of their performance, I don't see why top managers shouldn't be - just as long as the cruddy managers wake up in the gutter alongside the cruddy B movie actors. Not to worry though ... And yes, a person should be paid what there worth, of course. But i tend to think that to many people carry a form of 'father knows best' type of belief with regard to the upper executive bunch. Which is often consciously exploited on their part. And, as the responsibility they carry is extensive , and the rewards lucrative, so to should the penalties for its' abuse.
But, how to measure 'worth' ... the share price can't be it as it's an ultimately flawed benchmark. So ... certainly not an easy one to solve at all ... (scratch_head.png)
