I recently asked about website hosting here http://www.linuxformat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13065
Eventually I settled on http://www.freevirtualservers.com/ who have a range of packages starting from £0.00 a month, although there is a modest one off setup fee. IIRC the setup fee was about £10.
They do php, mysql, and run on Linux I think, had no complaints so far and I found good recommendations for them online which is why I went for them. _________________ I have been touched by his noodly appendage. |

I have heard good things about www.5quidhost.co.uk , a few people I know in Edinburgh use them.

You can always do what I did.
Buy a PogoPlug (£49 from PC World)
Buy a suitable USB HD
Install Plugbox Linux onto the PogoPlug (its a variant of Arch Linux)
Install the Apache, PHP and MySQL packages.
Register a domain with DynDNS
Voila, your own LAMP server and permanent web presence.
The PogoPlug uses only a few watts, so is significantly cheaper than running a full x86 based server or most hosting solutions with the advantage that you have full control over it.
It also makes a neat mail server (e.g bob@bobthebob.org ) _________________ Bomb #20: "Let there be light" |

# Cheep? -> Yes. Free or 60 Dollars a year.
# Allow php & mysql? Yes. Plus python, perl, some other DBs, frameworks and stuff.
# linux? Yes.
Support is through the forum. They are also very flexible. You ask them, hey, can you put this on the server? ...and they're like, sure.
Only problem is, no shell access. _________________ I codes here: http://notsure.tk |

thanks for the suggestions so far.
AndyBaxman: as much as I would love to do this, it requires I have somewhere permanent to plug it in!
5quidhost look quite good, but I would need to register my domain name separately?
The others look quite good to
Does anyone know if any of these have Imagemagick and ghostscript installed or if I can install it at a later stage (I have a nice little script that makes thumbnails of pdf s)?
The only host I have found so far that advertises it has imagemagick installed is godaddy.
Thanks _________________ For certain you have to be lost to find the places that can't be found. Elseways, everyone would know where it was |

Not sure what imagemagick is but found this about it in the vlexo forums. Apparently it's featured.
Didn't find anything about ghostscript though. _________________ I codes here: http://notsure.tk |

I wrote to 5quidhost asking about imagemagick and they replied: | Quote: | Hello,
I believe imagemagick is installed on most of our servers already, as it's fairly popular. Ghostscript less-so, but installing it on request wouldn't be a problem.
We do discounted hosting for LUG members (particularly edlug), details can be found here:
http://www.5quidhost.co.uk/lugoffer.php
If you have any further queries, don't hesitate to ask.
Kind Regards,
Admin |

sweet, they are looking better and better
They link http://www.domainmonster.com for Domain Name Registration. The demo seems pretty good
Anyone have experience with them or others (Found 123-reg.co.uk and ukreg.com so far)? I would quite like lots of control so that I can create sub domains (eg blog.mydomain.com) and set up email (I assume I just create a mx record pointing to 5quid?). I assume once i buy mydomain.com i can add blog.mydomain.com etc for no extra cost...
Thanks so far _________________ For certain you have to be lost to find the places that can't be found. Elseways, everyone would know where it was |
