Is there a Current Linux Distro that can run a parallel matrix printer on a modern computer (one without a parallel port)?

The computer is a HP s5653uk.

I have an old Panasonic kpx 2123, a PCI Express parallel card and a usb to parallel cable.

This setup prints perfectly on w7 and Ubuntu 9.04 live CD.

Non of These Distros work

Linux Mint 12
Pclos 2011
Ubuntu 10

Just want a distro that will work out of the box on the above hardware.

Without knowing more about the parallel-usb converter hardware, its hard to know what driver might be required.

You may need to look at the loaded modules (with the Ubuntu Live CD) first
Code:
lsmod

and compare with the newer distro in question. I believe the usblp driver may come into play with this.

I am confident that any of the recent distros could support your printer over this connection, but for anyone to help, you need to provide more info about your usb-parallel adapter - preferably the chipset details, so that we can research any additional drivers that may be required. If your device is usb connected, then with the device plugged in type this terminal conmand
Code:
lsusb

If the device is an internal card, then
Code:
/sbin/lspci -nnk

Post the output relating to the converter hardware only.

As reklan suggested, it may be just a matter of having the lp driver load at boot. Each distro has a different way to achieve this, but it is not complicated. So, choose your preferred distro, and we can advise further.[/code]

Probably for one of the reasons outlined to you already eg auto-loading of the lp driver.

Fedora 16 autoloads the lp driver, so that's probably the reason
