hello all,
new job, new pc... obviously with a non-standard size case so the video card wont fit.
on board amd radeon 6310 video card has two outputs, vga and hdmi. don't want to open brand new second monitor to test if it will need to be returned but is it likely i can run both monitors from the existing video card? |

Can you drill a hole in the case to make it fit? _________________ AMD PHENOM II X6, 14 GB DDR3, 500 GB hd, 1GB nVidia card, running Linux Mint 14 KDE / Win 7. Damn thing keeps breaking.
eeepc 1015PX, 1.66 Ghz Intel atom processor, 2 GB DDR3, 320 GB hd running Mint 14 MATE. Running great. |

Looks like a PC world special, (not found on Acer site).
So a guess really.
As it is only a 32bit bus, I would guess no. _________________ The sig between the asterisks is so cool that only REALLY COOL people can even see it!

Not sure where that comment about 32-bit bus comes from - I've several examples of (old) systems which can drive 2 monitors from amd radeon chipsets.
Unfortunately, the easiest way I know to check whether 2 monitors are possible is by running WinXP with all the proprietary drivers installed. _________________ Derek |

Read the display section in the lshw listing. my own Radeon motherboard (which will drive 2 monitors) has a 64bit bus.
So does the full version of the 6310, according to Wikipedia.
Seriously though, I could be wrong. I did say it was a guess, but being a budget proprietary motherboard, I wouldn't buy an extra monitor on the off chance.
You can get low-profile graphics cards though, so maybe try it and buy a gfx card if it doesn't work. _________________ The sig between the asterisks is so cool that only REALLY COOL people can even see it!

I see what you're saying, but you've misunderstood what I said - I have several sets of hardware with radeon chipsets which can drive 2 monitors, and they have 32-bit bus. _________________ Derek |

I agree. The architecture shouldn't come into it. I've also had 32-bit machines with radeon (and other graphics) hardware that supported dual display devices just fine.[/code] |

I should have been clearer, sorry. I was just pointing out that it is a cut-down cheaper version of the card, the full 6310 has a 64/128bit bus and will drive up to 3 displays.
Knowing how manufacturers trim specs to save even a fraction of a cent per unit, I doubt that a cut-price version will drive 2 displays simultaneously.
I have had to install graphics cards in several manufactured PCs for just that reason. Even ones with 2 outputs will only drive one at a time.
Of course, as I said, I could be wrong.
The documentation as usual, is non-existent, so the only way to find out for sure is to plug 2 monitors in and try it.
As ever,YMMV _________________ The sig between the asterisks is so cool that only REALLY COOL people can even see it!
