Advice, please: my Samsung mono laser started smoking and I looked for a new item. My local (linux-aware) dealer recommended the Samsung ML-1670, but the CUPS website was down, so I contacted Samsung and they referred me to ¨samsung.co.uk/support/model/ML-1670¨ and drew my attention to the ¨appropriate ¨ Linux 3.00.85 Unified Driver¨, which they assured me would do the job. So I downloaded it.
As I start to bring the new beast into service I looked at
Code:
/usr/lib/cups/driver/splix

which is where the code for my existing device sits. Splix does not offer support for the new thing, so I ask for a little advice as to how/where to unpack the tar.gz driver from /Downloads.
I could try:
[code]sudo apt- get-install tar.gz[code]
from /Downloads into something like [/code] /usr/lib/cups/driver/code] and md at the end as possibly /tar.gz, and seeing if it works.
As I know no-one loves a smart-arse, I humbly ask for guidance.
Best
David

Don't go downloading and installing satuff at random, this isn't Windows. As you have already determined that the splix driver is needed, linuxprinting.org confirms this, the first step should be a search for splix in your distro's package manager. Debian and Ubuntu have splix pacakges available.

Many thanx Nelz for your most timely input.
I had Splix installed already on my Mint 13, but there is no sign of support for the ML-1670 therein. I just reinstalled Splix so it should be the latest and greatest.
Samsung recommended that I install the Linux 3.00.85 Unified Drivers and these I have downloaded as a (large) .tar.gz file. I am wondering whence I should go next.
It did occur to me that I could cause meself - and the system - considerable confusion if I were to ¨take aim and fire¨, hence the cry for help.
Many thanx

David

I assume you got the driver from

http://www.samsung.com/sg/support/model/ML-1670/XSS-downloads?isManualDownload=true

Which got you this file UnifiedLinuxDriver_0.92.tar.gz

Thanx Ram for your prompt reply.

The details are essentially correct. They differ only in (I hope) minor details.

I have a funny feeling that Samsung has bought so many firms that they have made a special repository for the new (re-badged) hardware, for which they have created SPL code, separate to Splix.

It may be that this printer is a Photomax PM-1200PS rebadged.

I do not know - or care - (as long as it works!).

Many thanx

David

It occurs to me there may be a better way forward.

Instead of second-guessing apt, I could just unpack the .tar.gz file in the /downloads directory and point apt-get-install at it and let it decide where to place it.

Then I should be able to install me new jobbie and see if it works...

Wot thinkest?

Regards

David

apt-get works with .deb files from repositories, not random tarballs downloaded from www.god.knows.where. If you unpack the tarball you'll find Installer.htm which gives some information, and an installer. Unpacking the tarball creates a directory cdroot (it appears that this was meant to be run from a driver CD), then run

Code:
sh cdroot/autorun

to start the installer.

Many thanx for your kind advice, Nelz.
The tarball comes from the Samsung website, and is reputed (by them) to provide a complete answer.
I shall follow your advice immediately and post my results asap.
Best regards

Nelz, sorry for the delay. I have been busy trying to make sense of all this.

My present state is:
Code:
/Home/home/david/Downloads/cdroot/Linux/i386/install/vendormenu

Which does not run. It is shown as being an exe, and even trying under Gnome-Commander as root, no joy.

Can you suggest anything more, please?

Best regards

David

Nelz!

I have a cunning plan....

Wot if.... the install script were to represent the instructions to /media?

In that case what we have here is a standard plug & pray cd but with a menu to include M$, Apple and various types of Linux, via the pull-down menu?

Could it be that Samsung have no idea of the value to the Linux community of the cd?

I have a sealed box wiv the beast inside and did not intend to open it until I was reasonably sure that it would work, although Splix does not support it.

I think now would be time to test the cd and report back.

I would be much encouraged to hear your comments.

Best regards

David

Have you grab the right file.

in cdroot you should see a folder called Linux and a file called autorun.

from a terminal cd in where you have unpacked the file then run the command nelz said.

Edit, looks like you have.

from a terminal

Code:

cd /Home/home/david/Downloads/

then run

Code:

sh /cdroot/autorun

God might, but Firefox doesn't:

Ram, thank you so much for your guidance.
The system only finds as under:
Code:
cd /home/david/Downloads/

Then
Code:
sh /cdroot/autorun

Gives the response
Code:
can´t open cdroot/autorun

Changing to sudo has the same response.
I can´t help but wonder if the autorun will invoke a response from /media.
I have the new printer in a sealed box, presumably with the cd inside.
I thought I would check first if it would be supported and, if not, I would look for a deal from my local store based on a sealed box, their receipt and an order for something that would be sure to work. It might be time to bite the bullet and try the cd and run the risk of not being able to trade it in.
It does look as tho´ me /Home/home setup is a bit odd?
Best regards

Before doing that...

I was following your lead on the directory, you have the double home in an earlier post.

Code:

cd /home/david/Downloads/cdroot/Linux/

You may need to use sudo for this bit
Code:

./install.sh
