Yes, this does work. This hasn't been altered except for a bit of red to highlight the important bits...
If you can't read it properly, just go to google maps, hit "get directions", then enter "The Shire" and "Mordor" in the boxes. Then hit walking.

Alkmaar looks like a nice town to me, not very forbidding. Mind you I'm not sure that The Netherlands has anything that could be described as mountainous
