Why would you want proprietory drivers?

Say which of the ones you have are unsatisfactory and then those who have similar hardware can advise on whether it is worth trying to install a proprietory driver.

I have a vga monitor plugged into my laptop. On Windows 7 I get 1280 x 1024 but on Ubuntu only 1024 x 768. I was thinking, that the ATI propriety drivers might give a higher resolution screen. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics using 256 Gb of memory.

tia, from Alex.

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon you are right to consider installing the proprietary drivers as the open source driver has limitations.

Look for fglrx in the Ubuntu repositories.
