Steam comes out of my ears....

Postby mrv » Thu Jan 23, 2014 1:06 pm

Dear forum,
I read in LFX about steam from Valve and tried it on my win 7: total
disaster.. and I am still busy with repairs..
All that malware etc.

My question is: what will happen to my Mint 15 when I try this and what can Linux do about prevention.

Hello,

Sorry, I don't know what you mean. I've not experienced any malware with Steam or know of anyone who has. It's just a client for accessing a game download service run by Valve, and I've Steam for Linux runs fine on both my Ubuntu and Mint 16 systems.

If you're talking about SteamOS then that's a different thing entirely.

Steam for Windows 7 runs just fine, AFAIK. At least, it always used to. Odd that you should find the thought in a Linux magazine. You did download the Windows 7 version, right? Windows would not be happy if you installed the Linux build, like putting Diesel oil in a gasoline engine, nasty cleanup job.

If you install on Mint, just make sure it's the Steam app and not SteamOS!

It's Wndows, how can you know where the malware came from... apart from the pre-installed malware, that comes from Redmond :)

Oh, and don't forget the Redmond mantra that Linux code is itself viral...
