Shutdown and bootup woes

Postby heiowge » Tue Mar 04, 2014 10:50 pm

The old Dell pc I got given has a flaw. Every 3rd or 4th shutdown fails to do so. Even alt+sysrq+REISUB fails to work. I have to do a hard shutdown.

The next bootup usually fails. It takes longer than normal to boot and fails to allow access to the keyboard and mouse. I have to pull out the power cable and wait for 30 seconds. Any idea why?

As a wild stab in the dark. I'd say hardware issues. Although I suspect we will need a little more info.

what do you mean by " fails to shutdown"? is it simply not powering off or is it locking up in some way?
So it looks like I'm back to LinuxMint again. Why you ask? Because my machine smell nicer.

I'm not too sure I'd want a Mint and Cinnamon muffin with my brew though. Guess I'm lucky they don't run my local bakery.

I'll take a picture next time it fails and post it.

Has it been overclocked? Go into the BIOS and reset it to safe values, then work from there.

There should be a boot log left over from the last boot check the logs directory under /var.

Enjoy the Choice :)

The last shutdown was successful and the boot record shows all OK. I'm guessing it overwrites it each time? If so, I'll have to wait for the next crappy shutdown. :?
