nVidia drivers for Mint 15-64

Postby DavidMcCrossan » Fri Mar 21, 2014 2:51 pm

I have reverted back from Mint 16-32 to 15-64, because it worked well for me.

I have selected Cinnamon as my GUI and have received the message that no hardware acceleration drivers are in use. I have gone to the software centre and installed the nVidia drivers but they have disappeared into thin air.

Can anyone please tell me how to install them, and where they are.

Best regards

nVidia drivers for Mint 15-64

Postby DavidMcCrossan » Fri Mar 21, 2014 5:22 pm

Further to my last I have realised that my display is not recognised and Cinnamon thinks I have a laptop with a lower resolution. It will not detect the display. My Computer shows the video card is nVidia 1284.

This might involve Xserver config, which is outwith my comfort zone, so I may need some help with this to...

nVidia drivers for Mint 15-64

Postby DavidMcCrossan » Sat Mar 22, 2014 9:16 am

Still trying...

From the nVidia website I found the relevant driver for my card (GeForce GT630) and downloaded it to /lib-64 and attempted to install using the nVidia instructions.

I found a new dir under /root, lib64.

The browser shows me:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.49
Code: Select all
 is safely there.

From the terminal, as root, I entered
cd /lib64 then
sh ./NVIDIA-Linux x86_64-331.49 run
Code: Select all
Term returns "can't open /NVIDIA etc".
I have checked spelling several times and am now stuck.

Any ideas, please?

Best

Don't save files in /lib64, that's for installed libraries, put it somewhere in your home directory.

You need to run the installer as root or with sudo.

Make sure you uninstall any nvidia packages from your package manger before you install this way.

nVidia drivers for Mint 15-64

Postby DavidMcCrossan » Sat Mar 22, 2014 12:19 pm

Once again, grateful thanks for your renewed help, Nelz.

The nVidia web site downloaded the file to that location. I shall copy it to /home/david/Downloads and try to install from there, as root.

Once again I shall look at package manager and uninstall as nec.

Best regards

nVidia drivers for Mint 15-64

The Dir /lib64 actually contains the file
ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
Code: Select all

I have uninstalled the existing nvidia-settings and copied the above file to /home/david/Downloads, but does not impress the terminal....

I have no idea what I am doing (again).

nVidia drivers for Mint 15-64

Postby DavidMcCrossan » Sat Mar 22, 2014 6:31 pm

Hi Guys!

I have done a fresh download from nVidia and the current situation is:
/lib64
Code: Select all
/ld-linux-86-64.so.2
which it seems is a link to a shared library.

/home/david/Downloads/
contains
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.49.run
which I read is a shell script.

I am a little confused (which is normal) because the download from nVidia was 60MB and the script is a measly 11Mb. Am I missing something here?

Please would some-one give me a steer as to what to do
next?

I have tried to install the shell-script before but the term tells me there is no such file - as root and I am con-fuddled.

Best regards

nVidia drivers for Mint 15-64 <partial success>

Postby DavidMcCrossan » Wed Mar 26, 2014 5:49 pm

I contacted my dealer (who is German, and Linux savvy) and he agreed that I should reinstall my working nvidia EN8400GS and go from there.

Cinnamon flies, and my 19" monitor is accepted with

1280x1060 res.

Superb!

Later I will have a discussion with my man to see what can be done. First things first.

My Samsung Laser ML-1670 still will not print, but that is another subject.

Many thanx for of your willing help and guidance

Best Regards
