OK, I know it's computer related, but I couldn't think of anywhere else, so - does anyone else use 1and1.co.uk for hosting? I'm thinking of using them, but noticed that they have an affiliate programme. I thought I'd at least help someone here and go through their affiliate link and share the wealth... _________________ I'm not a spammer - honest! |

Hang on 1sf (troll), if it's got an ftp account you don't need to use wysiwyg, you just ftp your files to the site. The fact that even the cheapest includes PHP 3,4,& 5, SSI and Multi site hosting suggests that it's not just for numpties. I'd be going for something biggger anyway, 'coz I want mySQL as well... _________________ I'm not a spammer - honest! |

when i signed up (on the cheapest one) i planned to write it myself but when i started i had to use templates etc, which was more than a bit gay perhaps you're looking at a different package or they have changed it i will look and see

Try ftp'ing to your site. Can you either see an index.html, index.php or index.htm or even (aagh) an index.asp file there? If not, can you see a directory labelled 'public_html', or 'www' or something, and if so what's inside it? If you find an index.* file there, try copying it away, then replacing it with one crafted lovingly in vi, or - given the cruel comments by others, one written in notepad... _________________ I'm not a spammer - honest! |

Does anyone else find the "please read thoroughly" comment somewhat ironic? _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

Damn, I knew I shouldn't have got 1sf (troll) involved in one of my posts. One mention of him, and everyone piles in. Haven't you lot got homes to go to? Oh well, seeing as you're here, can anyone else recommend a hosting company? I'm looking for the ability to host more than one site, plus the usual LAMP stuff. I'd rather go for a larger company, as I've had my fill of one-man band resellers... _________________ I'm not a spammer - honest! |

We use I&1 for our site hosting, support is good, they offer a Linux option, and our site uses LAMP.
If you go for thr professional package, you can have as many .co.uk domains as you like, up to 100, I think.
They also offer antivirus and spam filtering on mailboxes, which so far seems to work well. We've been with them 2 or 3 years now _________________ The sig between the asterisks is so cool that only REALLY COOL people can even see it!

Yes, dear.
Anyway, wyliecoyote, thanks for that. I seem to have come across a few detrimental comments about 1&1 recently - which isn't terribly surprising, as they are a big company, so not *everyone's* goign to be happy. Whilst doing some dredging though I cam across unitedhosting.co.uk. They seem to be quite good, cheap and friendly. They also have an open forum which is re-assuring. I'll have a closer look and try and make up my mind... _________________ I'm not a spammer - honest! |
