In a fit of newbie stupidity I accidentally *blush* deleted the default panel at the top of the screen.
Anyone know a way to get it back ?

come on your having a laugh nobody can be that stupid  
what would help is knowing which distro you are using so we know more or less what tools you have available
and yes I have done something similar more than once
