Xara LX graphics app reaches 0.2

Postby guy » Sat Feb 18, 2006 2:05 pm

The Xara graphics app is one of the better-kept secrets of the Windows (TM) world. It is a heavyweight professional vector+bitmap tool without the heavyweight professional finance of Adobe or Corel - and it's coming to Linux.

The open source port, Xara LX, has reached 0.2. Check it out, download it, contribute to it, at:

P.S. Know any Mac developers too?

It's not really open source of the source isn't available. I wonder why they are only releasing binaries now.

OK it's not open source /yet/. But they say it is being GPL-ed.
For a bit about their strategic thinking see:
http://www.xaraxtreme.org/news/11-10-05.html
And for a bit of detail on the open sourcing tactics:

If you want to know why they aren't opening the existing non-Linux code base, I guess you'd have to ask them. Maybe the Windows code is tangled up with somebody's IP or cashflow or something.
