Hello.

I am after is something that can play mp3 music from a wireless Linux server.

I know I could use a SFF computer for this, but they are still too noisy.

What are the chances of a media player like the Showcenter 200 or D-Link DSM working with samba?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dont know if your still looking but I have netgear mp101 running on my network. Stream mp3s and internet radio from pc wirelessly to mp101 connected to sound system. Use twonkyvision media server which has linux packages and simple to install - netgear's own software runs v badly on xp and dont provide linux support. I picked mine up cheap as they are old now but works perfect.

Yes. Im building one today!!

Im using Slim server software for the server.

For the client I was planning to use DSLinux on the compact flash, however it will not configure my WLAN card (rt2500 chip).

So i need a Linux distro that fits on a 512mb cf, with WLAN suport.

Any ideas...

Im going to try SUSE slick.... might need a bigger cf ...... but at least it sees my wlan.

The rt2500 chip works in dsl via ndiswrapper, latest download of dsl saves wireless configuration automatically. This works well http://www2.informatik.hu-berlin.de/~bading/cpx-mini/ on usb/cf, debian based knoppix/kanotix hack, hardware detection pretty good.

I tried using DSL with ndiswrapper, however there was no inf. file on the windows driver cd.

If someone could talk me through installing the rt2500 drivers on dsl I would be greatfull.

So does CPX mini detect rt2500?

If all else fails im going to buy a 4gb cf and use suse slick!

Try driver listed here - http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/mediawiki/index.php/List#R, Ill give cpx-mini a try on the machine which has rt2500 and let you know tomorrow. (020506)

No, again you need ndiswrapper but previous dsl didnt save wireless config without a bit of hacking.(thats just booting from cd or usb stick ) Checked link above and worked ok. If you still have trouble just pm me with email adress and I will forward rt2500.inf and other stuff.

No worries, btw latest cpx-mini does have rt2500 driver - got mine up and running manually in 2 mins.

Ok this is for kanotix-2006-cpx-mini-7.iso and worked 1st time for nic with rt2500 chipset. Interface comes up as ra0 using iwconfig so just did
sudo iwconfig ra0 essid linksys
sudo iwconfig ra0 mode managed
sudo iwconfig ra0 key your key
sudo iwconfig ra0 channel whatever
Confirmed settings with iwconfig then clicked settings icon, netcardconfig and said yes to dhcp broadcast (your choice) - up and running. Haven't checked that interface comes up again on reboot as havent tried saving the settings yet.

I can connect to my slim server through the wireless card.

cpx mini is small enough to fit on my compact flash. No noise : )
