Well, its finally happened. After years of service, my trusty 3Com US Robotics 56k Faxmodem has died. Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement that will work with SuSE 8.2 ?

It's not a modern modem:

Quote:

Compatible with virtually any PC - including models running DOS or Windows 3.1... Renowned for its reliable connections and ease of use, this popular controller-based modem

It's the same old 3com USR modem. It even looks identical to my seven year old model.

Indeed here is USR's support page for the modem (not hard to find as Novatech give you the manufacturer code).

Jeez they're still charging that much? If you're that desperate I have a fully functioning USR 56k Professional Message serial modem (complete with Windblows installation Floppies a CD and all the cables) that I would accept any reasonable offer for Wink

I suppose the thing is that the modem has such a good reputation that they feel that people will still buy it at that price. Novatech aren't always the cheapest and it might be available cheaper elsewhere, but I'm not going to go hunting around the internet for a better price, the OP can do that if he wants to.

The one I have is almost brand new was installed and then the office upgraded to BB so the serial modem was, literally, chucked out and I rescued itas a backup for my own system, then I got BB, so the thing sits here!

hiya

well if its a PCI unit then TOPIC modems should work.

i have/had one and the code/driver is available for suse. at worst you may have to make a loadable module for it. the work of a mere minute.

I bought one, but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions why would be appreciated!

I first plugged in the new modem and ran it, and then let Yast2 detect and configure it, but it had the same effect.

This is a sample of the ppp log file:

pppd: Modem initialized
pppd: Sending: ATDT08089933001
pppd: waiting for carrier
pppd: CONNECT 46666/ARQ/V90/LAPM-SREJ/V42BIS
pppd: Carrier detected. Waiting for prompt
pppd: NO CARRIER
pppd: Don't know what to do! Starting pppd and hoping for the best.
pppd: Serial connection established
pppd: Using interface ppp0
pppd: Connect: ppp0<->/dev/ttyS0
pppd: Serial line is looped back
pppd: Connection terminated
We are disconnected
pppd died: Loopback detection (exit code 17)

1sf (troll) you owe me a new keyboard!! I was not expecting that and had just taken a mouthful of special Vimto when I was (un)fortunate enough to read your post

EDIT: I also meant to mention, before gumming up my keyboard, that I have a serial/parallel modem lying about, not sure if it works with Linux never got quite as far as testing it, but as it worked on 3.1 and 98 with no drivers I think it is safe to say it will. Assuming you are right you can have it for the cost of postage, its of no use to me. It should be possible to get your modem working though so thats a last resort offer Wink
