|
|
The links below point to various stages of an experiment concerning a woman (Windows User) married to a Linux user who reluctantly agreed an experiment to try several Distros. What she wanted was something that did all the right things out of the box. Add software? Update software? Hack this and that? Something maybe to learn later. But for now it had to make the right intial impressions.
Here is her review of Ubuntu
Here is her review of Fedora Core
Here is her review of PCLinuxOS
(and while you're there click on 6th and 16th March also!)
Simply Mepis
Mandrake 10.1CE
And the winner is...
Actually it's not settled yet, as they are going to do a play-off between the two best, so it's between PCLOS and MEPIS.

I had a feeling PCLOS would be somewhere close to winning, even before reaching the last paragraph _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

Did you have a look at the links, though?
PCLOS is not right for everyone, I appreciate it because I think it is the perfect way into Linux for beginners. Personally I use Gentoo more, but I could not recommend that to the majority of new users. _________________

There is now a roundup page for the experiment at:
http://linux-blog.org/index.php?/archives/2005/05/05.html
There is also a recent entry from Mr Devnet about some of the abuse aimed at her from fans of the distros she did not like. Some of it is a bit nasty! See it here:
http://linux-blog.org/index.php?/archives/81-Animosity-Unfounded.html
At the end of the day, however, I have to say that what she did was about determining a suitable Linux distro for a particular type of user! _________________
