Whats the difference between the two? Is it purely cosmetic ?
I have GNOME on mine. Is it difficul to change to KDE ? _________________ Max

GNOME tends to focus on defaults and simplicity.
KDE focuses on ease of configurability.
Take the recent complaints from Linus Torvalds. He wanted to make it so click events on the title bar did something different than normal because every command in the context menu would have a shortcut key combo and that makes it just a waste of a mouse click.
This wasn't possible in Metacity (the GNOME window manager) but is possible in KWin (the KDE window manager). |

I believe the difference comes down to personal choice and which one you feel more comfortable with.
Dificult to change, depends,
I use FC6 and install GNOME and KDE. Then after the install reboot I run switchdesk KDE and from then on I'm in KDEland, but can still run GNOME apps. |

Gnome is more like Mac, KDE is more like Windows.
But they are "like" not "the same as".
You will, depending on distro, probaly find more options for configurability in KDE than Gnome, and doing some things is easier, but if you are happy with Gnome, why change?.
If you are using a mainstream distro like suse or Fedora, etc. you can install kde and try it out.
If you are using Ubuntu, there is a KDE distro called Kubuntu.
It depends what you use a PC for. _________________ The sig between the asterisks is so cool that only REALLY COOL people can even see it!

Note the change of subject - let's not add to the flame wars!
KDE and Gnome have their own pros and cons - I prefer Gnome as I don't need the depth of config options that KDE gives me.
On asthetics alone, I do like the effect that KDE gives me when I hover over an icon in the panel.
But, I prefer Gnome - just because, not because it's better.
The best solution? Give both of them a try and see which one you settle on - you might be surprised!
I'd also refer you to Graham's excellent article in LXF a couple of issues ago where he gave Gnome a chance for a month to see how he got on (Graham prefers KDE). He gave a good and honest appraisal of Gnome through a KDE users eye, so it's good reading if you're curious.
Thanks,
Andy |

When I first climbed aboard the Linux behemoth I loved KDE, like windows and very comforting, but I now run Gnome and get very annoyed with KDE bloat

I am like the others, it depends on my mood, at the moment I am using KDE at home and work, but use Gnome on Debian on my laptop. I have used Gnome at home and may use it again if I fancy a change. But as wylie says don't forget that even if you have favourite items on certain desktops you can use them on both, for example I use Konqueor in my Gnome evironment, and use GFTP in my KDE environment. _________________ My knowledge comes with no warranty...........

I prefer the feel of GTK apps in a GTK environment; but prefer Xfce over GNOME as GNOME is heavy on resources.
Having said that, I'm using KDE at the moment and seem to be getting along nicely with it - Bluetooth works, Plug and Play works, love Katapult and Yakuake - everything fits together nicely for me. And with Kubuntu, GTK apps don't really look all that bad which I'm happy with. Qt apps look awful in Xfce no matter what I try, so I'm sticking with KDE for the time being. And it seems quicker than I expected which is a bonus _________________

That's very much the way I feel. In fact, I rarely bother to install both desktops on a distro. Instead I'm quite happy using KDE on "KDE distros" like SUSE and Mandriva, and Gnome on "Gnome distros" like Ubuntu and Fedora.
And this "mood" business is also the determining factor as to which distro I decide to use at any particular time. I turn my multi-boot computer on and when the menu comes up I think "Now, which one shall I boot into today?"
That's what I love about Linux. There is so much choice. It’s all free (well, apart from my Mandriva Discovery) and all there for the trying out of. I don't think I have ever asked anyone for advice on which distro/which desktop/which program I should use*. I just go and try them and make up my own mind.

If you think I have nothing better to do that correct your illiterate drivel you are quite mistaken.
I would find far greater value in spending my time proving that Marrea might once have had a contrary opinion to the one expressed above, but you know, I'm not going to. And do you know why? Because I'd far rather spend my time having a stab at you, fish face.
Are you watching super_tux? I scarcely feel warmed up yet, perhaps old fish-for-brains will post some other nonsense I can get riled up about. _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

I'm just attempting to fulfill a readers request by slagging you off. Strange isn't it how so many people want to see you hurt emotionally or (more often) physically. It must be something you bring out in people. Had you thought of taking up a career as a punch-bag? It mostly involves just hanging around, so you won't find it too taxing.

KDE bloat? What bloat? The sources required to install KDE are less in size and complication when compared with Gnome.
When I open a kde terminal it actually appears on my screen, gnome I go away and make a cup of tea and it's just about there.
I load nautilus and can watch as it re-draws the filenames, icons, dates, sizes, ownership etc Konqueror just does it, in <1 second, and has more columns to work out.
Running Slackware with KDE 3.5.4 used 94MB RAM on my laptop, where is the bloat?
Possibly your using a machine that's not quite as crappy as my laptop, so maybe you don't notice, but KDE is just about usable on this machine, gnome is not.
Not that this makes gnome bad, I certainly would not advise someone to avoid it (unless they had a low (sub 400MHZ) spec machine. But KDE does not appear to be bloated when compared. _________________ I think, therefore I compile |
