Hi,

I was just wondering for some feedback as to how people get into careers with Linux/Unix...

I am a youngish (Late 20's) Windows Admin with qualifications in Microsoft etc etc, but more and more I am becoming interested in Open Source etc but as my workplace does not use it, really I am stunting my growth into it as I am just a home user and have no experience at an Enterprise level!

If I were starting out in a career in IT I would of course get a qualification and get an entry level job and work up, but I can not afford to do this at this stage in my life....

I am not saying I want to turn my back fully on Microsoft, just want to keep my options open I guess. I tinker (Not a programmer but play with scripts and commands etc) with Linux and a day to day basis when I get the time, and as mentioned I run it at home.

Any suggestions on what I can do in this situation?

No, I don't have a job using Linux. But, surely a good option would be to get a recognised Linux qualification (such as form the LPI) and then promote yourself as someone capable of working with both systems. From what one reads on t'internet a lot of companies seems to use Windows desktops with Linux servers, you'd be ideally positioned with qualifications in both and experience in at least one.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I did do a CompTIA Linux+ course a while back which I enjoyed. I think I might head down the Redhat track and attempt the RHCT/RHCE path and see where it takes me.

I am not happy but comfortable in my current job, so maybe I will get this path started and then look for a job in an environment that has both systems as you have mentioned... maybe an educational type environment...

I would like to make some kind of contribution to open source in the future, so I need some real world experience with it!

Not planning on getting rich then? From what I have heard, there isn't a lot of money in educational IT support.

Still, good luck what ever you try.

I'm applying for a job, advertised at Nokia to test the N8xx series. They are asking for people with Linux experience and some other things. My Linux knowhow isn't guru or anything, but i'll apply anyway. It also helps that I am already employed testing their phones through another company.
The word is that nokia are going to adopt linux as their new platform. I think we are going to see Linux in a lot more fields and with that will come job opportunities.

Good Luck.

There is plenty of money in ICT, just look at all the wedge we waste on failed ICT projects in this country.

I was chatting to a mate the other day who works for a recruitment firm, and some of their cisco guys earn £20k a month and thats normal.

EDIT:

Ooop, forgot the OP. Smile Maybe you could look at some sort of mail/spam/firewall/gateway thing at home ie sme server, smoothwall etc then convince the guys at work that its a good idea, then be the man to support it. This may even convince your employer to pay for your external training, although I doubt it.

We recently bought some firewalls with load balancing, really expensive cira 15k the pair, and basically just a couple of load balancing smoothwall boxes. We really should have put them together ourselves, but I guess when you purchase third party you get someone to blame if stuff goes wrong.
