Having acquired my ticket for LinuxExpo at Olympia in London from the 23rd-25th October I was looking forward to the event, although I was somewhat confused about the setup as my ticket informed me it was in colaboration with MACexpo, seeing the ticket I dismissed this and looked forward to the event which I attended on the Saturday.
To my horror when I arrived at Olympia, I could not beleive my eyes......it was in fact a MAC expo in its entirity with about a dozen 1 or 2 man stands from the Linux world( few ppl milling round the stands) pushed to the the far corner like the old TOWN TRAMP!!!!!!!. Having attneded previous ones in London, the Linux world (UK) had commaned the full hall. I cannot beleive that there was so much disintrest in the Linux (UK) community. The usual companies were there which i expected but in short it was terrible as all i could do was here about how great the MAC is and how to design apps using a MAc, blah, blah, blah. This is not what should be offered if Linux is to be sold to the masses.
The Linux GREAT debate room was ( I stumbled past it, by mistake) a flat screen TV with about 30 chairs and half of them populated for each of the speakers. After 20 minutes of continuosly hearing MAC guff I was out the door, how has it come to this that LINUX is sharing an EXPO with MAC, never again shall I waste my time with these sort of events.........
HERE ENDITH THE RANT!!!!!! |

Well, even Apple can't be bothered to go to the Mac part of the expo... as companies have to decide more carefully about where to spend their cash, expos seem to be becoming less and less relevant. I suspect potential attendees see things in much the same way. It becomes a vicious circle of apathy towards expos. _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

Perhaps if they were more central to the whole country more people would attend; or if they had several smaller ones in several major cities (including those in the North. And when I say North, I mean Newcastle. Not Manchester.) Believe it or not, there is intelligent life after Watford... _________________

We have a similar problem with politicians and business in New South Wales. They think NSW really stands for Newcastle Sydney Wollongong, everything outside of these major centres is ignored |

The problem is clearly not attracting visitors but exhibitors. It is a fact, however unpalatable to those from the other end of the country, that overseas exhibitors are more likely to come to a London-based event. Birmingham tries hard with an exhibition centre next to an airport, but even they have an uphill battle. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. And exhibitors tend to fund their stands from marketing budgets controlled by bean counters, who now want to see returns on investment for setting up stalls with lots of merchandise, pretty things in lycra, programmers to talk to attendees instead of programming and so on.
The alternatives of TV, radio, magazine & web advertising make much more sense to bean counters because they don't get the time wasters (tyre kickers) without money that attend expos. |
