Hi!
Finally I'm planning to buy a netbook (it has taken me several months to find a good excuse to do it ).
I have two options right now. The Acer Aspire 1 and the Dell mini 9. Both are in the same price range. I think that the main difference is that the Aspire has a real HD and the Dell has a solid state HD. Any idea about which one is better? The HD is much bigger. Does it affect the duration of the battery?
Any other option I should consider? Obviously I don't want to pay a Windows license.
Thanks,

The SSD make netbooks "bullet proof" compared to standard hard drives used in netbooks and notebooks. The first thing to go in laptop/notebooks is the hard drive as the heads bounce when they are moved and bumped around whilst turned on.
My Asus Eee PC 701 is rock solid but I really feel that you need to actually get your hands on one and see how the keyboard, track pad, mouse clicker and screen work for you. |

That's right. The only problem is that I want it to store my photos while travelling. I'm afraid that the disc space could be a problem in that case. It's a thing I should thing about.

In fact I have another laptop, this is the reason I couldn't find an excuse to buy a netbook, with a full size keyboard and a good screen. I'm ready to use an tiny keyboard and screen. I want to buy the netbook for the trips I don't want to take my laptop with me. I don't plan to do a lot of work with it. I'll use it mainly in trips and for delivering presentations.
Thanks for answering,

As it's a netbook, how about Tiny Core linux?
a) If you can't get online with a netbook, it's kinda lost it's whole raison d'etre anyway - So, the lack of apps is moot
b) The lack of locally installed apps would give you more room on your storage media for ... well ... storage _________________ Oontz <-- Click Here |

I would suggest one of these.
Best build quality by a mile and far higher screen resolution. |

Put an SHDC card in the card slot and you'll have room for a lot of photos. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

I've got mini 9 and am very happy with it. I got mine for £190 from Tesco Direct currently out of stock it looks like they may come back in stock at £194.77 but you'll have to leave your e-mail addy.
The Mini is easy upgradeable, 3x6 inch flap on the back held in placed by 2 screws. Once removed you have access to memory and ssd. 2 gig stick only cost £18 from crucial. SSD now available upto 64 gig.
One think to bear in mind is that some of the keys are in odd places.
No F keys, they are Fn Key combo's on the a to : row, yes that only 10 keys, no F11 or 12.
The pipe key is on the right of the space bar.
The right hand shift key is on the small side.
# is above the enter key and below backspace.
With a little use you get used to it, just like full size KB are not all equal. _________________

When I was talking about a netbook I was thinking on one of those cheap and light laptops. In fact I'm not a big fan of online apps. During trips I'll use mainly something to organise photos like Picassa, something to write an small record of the trip, Firefox and a media player. In any case I think that my desktop computer is less powerful than any of those netbooks.

It seems to be really nice. The only drawbacks are the size, it seems to be a little bit heavier, and the duration of the battery. It says that it last 2.25 hours and I'd like to have a bigger battery, if possible. In fact Idon't know how long the battery of the other options last.

Good. About the battery, do you have an estimation of its duration? During trips the duration of the battery is quite important.
Thanks about the warning of the keyboard. I'd use an Spanish keyboard so some of the keys will be in different places but it's good to know that there are no function keys.

Look on Ebay for high capacity batteries. I've got a 10400mAh one for my Eee, it's a fair git bigger, and heavier, but it lasts ages. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

Not used it to much out doors as of yet ( too cold) at work I get 4 hours as an mp3 player. Battery monitor says 4h 20 minutes when fully charged. _________________

Ah yes, I have one. The principle benefits are the nearly full-size keyboard, loads of hard disk space (120GB) and a high screen resolution, though being physically small you might find you need to bump up your font sizes.
The drawbacks, SLED as the default distro (can be usefully replaced with Ubuntu) and the battery life. There is a six cell battery available (as nelz suggests, ebay is awash with them for many varieties of netbooks) which gives something like double the life, but as I can't afford one just yet, I can't verify that.
Memory can be easily and quite cheaply upgraded to 2GB. Some users have even replaced the default HD with an SSD, but this would make it a rather more expensive buy. _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

Maybe this could be a good theme for a Roundup in the magazine. _________________ English is not my mother tongue. So, be ready to read bad grammar and limited vocabulary |

Hmm, while searching for the netbook roundup that the Register did a while ago, I stumbled across these articles by Chris Bidmead. Worth a read in my opinion.
The netbook roundup is here, but it's a little out of date now. _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

Do not get the Acer Aspire the CdRoms are Matshita and it's a gamble weather they will work or not aparently the company will not even acknowledge theres a problem let alone fix it. Research is your friend. |

The Acer Netbook doesn't have a cdrom drive. _________________
