An Operating system, usually abbreviated to OS, is the heart of any computer's software. It has a "kernel" which controls all the rest of the software. The rest of the OS comprises things like hardware drivers, user interfaces, file systems and so on. These may all be piled into the kernel code as a monolithic OS, or may be in separate programs called OS modules.
